Each year, Onekama Consolidated Schools will:
- Eliminate 74,520 plastic forks and spoons from entering the landfill.
- Prevent 589 pounds of plastic waste from being generated annually.
- Save approximately $2,800 each year by no longer purchasing disposable plastic utensils.
- Reduce waste hauling costs by an additional $1,000 annually.
By making one simple switch, the district is improving its bottom line while significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

For Amanda Grossnickle, Food Service Director, the decision was about much more than saving money.
“We strive to provide nutritious meals for our students. We felt the next step was to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics and create a healthier, more sustainable environment by bringing reusable stainless-steel utensils back to our school.”
